Agartala, 5th December 2023:  During a visit to the residence of the late Padma Shri awardee Thanga Darlong today, Leader of Opposition Animesh Debbarma criticized the government for its alleged neglect in honoring the acclaimed artist during this death. Thanga Darlong’s family, in a poignant revelation, disclosed the lack of support through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, citing the absence of a house and drinking water facilities.

Expressing deep concern, Debbarma emphasized that Thanga Darlong, a Padma Shri recipient, faced various deprivations and passed away in great pain. Furthermore, it was revealed that the late artist did not receive the state honors he was entitled to posthumously.

The family reported that neither the District Magistrate, nor the District Superintendent of Police made any arrangements for state honors during the cremation. He strongly condemned the oversight, describing it as disappointing and a lack of respect for the pride of Tripura, Padma Shri Thanga Darlong. He pledged to bring this matter to the attention of the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister to ensure the late artist receives the recognition he deserves. In addition to the opposition leader’s condemnation, Thanga Darlong’s family has demanded housing and drinking water facilities through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana from both the central and state governments. The family expressed their disappointment at the failure to provide these essential amenities, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.
