College of Fisheries & KVK, South Tripura observed World Soil Day 2023

Agartala, December 05: On December 5, 2023, World Soil Day (WSD) was observed by the Multi-Technology Testing Center (MTTC) & Vocational Training Center (VTC) under the aegis of the College of Fisheries, CAU (I), Lembucherra, Tripura (W).

The World Soil Day was organized in cooperation with the Indian Institute of Millets, Hyderabad, and focused on the theme “Soil and Water: A Source of Life”. Prof. Ratan Kumar Saha, Dean, College of Fisheries, CAU (I), Lembucherra, Tripura (W) presided over the occasion, and being graced by Loken Das, General Manager, NABARD, Tripura.

During the celebration, Dr. Vinodkumar S. Naik and Dr. Chandrakant Sawant from MTTC & VTC moderated and delivered technical sessions on December 5, 2023. More than eighty individuals including scientists, research scholars, students, farmers, and farmwomen took part in the sessions.

The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations portal (https://www.fao.org/world-soil-day/about-wsd/en/) also highlights the event organised at campus. The program’s primary goals are to raise awareness of healthy soil and promote the sustainable management of soil.

Meanwhile, KVK, South Tripura observed World Soil Day on 5th December 2023 with the theme “Soil and Water: A source of Life” by organizing a one day awareness programme at West Paikhola village.

The programme was attended by Dr. B K Nanda, Sr. Scientist & Head and Dr. I Gohain, Subject Matter Specialist, KVK, South Tripura along with Tapan Debnath, VLEW and Panchayat member J Baidya.

Dr. Nanda, in his speech, mentioned that soil is the key player in climate change mitigation. He also added that without healthy soil, the very foundation of food security – the fundamental necessity for survival is jeopardized. Dr. Gohain, in her speech mentioned the importance of soil testing and how to collect soil sample for testing.

A total of 57 numbers of participants participated in the programme. During the programme, leaflets on soil testing were distributed among the participants. Besides this, Nano Urea was also distributed among them. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by the VLEW.
