Agartala, November 13: Padma Shri Thanga Darlong, a renowned folk singer and musician from Tripura, is suffering from old age-related ailments and has been confined to his bed for a long time. He has stopped eating and drinking and has lost his ability to speak. He is currently staying at his daughter’s house in Muruibari village of Kailashahar in Unakoti district. He is 103 years old.
Concerned about his health condition, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb instructed the Director of Health Services, Dr. Supriya Mallik, to send a medical team to examine and treat Darlong. Accordingly, the Chief Medical Officer of Unakoti district, Dr. Shankha Subhra Debnath, visited Darlong’s house on Monday and conducted a preliminary check-up.
He said that Darlong’s blood sugar level was normal and that a pathology technician would collect his blood sample on Tuesday for further tests. He also said that he would visit Darlong again on Tuesday and provide him with the necessary treatment.
Dr. Debnath added that Darlong’s health condition was being monitored round the clock by the doctors and that he was being given the best possible care. He also thanked the Chief Minister for his prompt action and concern for the Padma Shri awardee.
Darlong is a legendary figure in the field of folk music and culture of Tripura. He is an expert in playing the rosem, a bamboo-made flute-like instrument. He has performed in various national and international events and has received several awards and honours, including the Padma Shri in 2019. He is also a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Tripura Atithi Samman. He is widely respected and admired by the people of Tripura and beyond.
Earlier, Minister Tinku Roy had also visited Darlong and expressed his solidarity and support.
