Agartala, 6th August 2026: Tension erupted at Dharmanagar District Hospital in North Tripura on Thursday following the death of a 55-year-old patient, with the deceased’s family alleging medical negligence.
According to family members, Jalal Uddin, a resident of Botorshi area, was brought to the hospital after he fell seriously ill. The attending doctor reportedly advised an ECG to assess his condition. However, the family alleged that the first ECG machine was not functioning, and valuable time was lost while another machine was arranged. They claimed that Jalal Uddin died during this delay and blamed the hospital authorities for negligence in treatment.
The allegations were strongly denied by the attending physician, *Dr. Soumeli Nath*, who said the patient had already died before being brought to the hospital. She stated that an ECG was ordered only to confirm the death as per standard medical protocol.
Dr. Nath further asserted that the ECG machine, which the family claimed was out of order, had been used successfully on another patient shortly before the incident. She also alleged that some relatives of the deceased attempted to harass her following the patient’s death.
Later, members of the deceased’s family lodged a written complaint against the doctor at Dharmanagar Police Station, alleging medical negligence.
Police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Officials said the allegations would be thoroughly examined, and only after the investigation would it be possible to determine the exact cause of death and whether any negligence occurred in the patient’s treatment.
