PCC Chief slams BJP,  TMP for failing to work on tribal developemnt says Congress  to Contest Village Council Polls

Date:

Agartala, 20th  August 2026 : Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Asish Kumar Saha on Thursday announced that the Congress will contest the upcoming Village Council (VC) elections and accused the BJP and its alliance partner, Tipra Motha Party, of failing to protect the interests and welfare of the state’s indigenous population.

Saha said the party has already intensified its organisational activities across the state in preparation for the VC elections.

“Over the past few days, we have been strengthening our organisation with the Village Council elections in mind. In the hilly areas, despite our organisational limitations, the Adivasi Congress and Pradesh Congress have been working together to regain the confidence and trust of the people,” he said.

The TPCC chief highlighted several initiatives undertaken during earlier Congress-led governments for the welfare and empowerment of tribal communities. He pointed to the formation of the district council, implementation of forest rights, extension of reservation benefits and various development and welfare programmes aimed at improving the socio-economic condition of tribal people.

However, Saha alleged that the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Tripura, along with Tipra Motha, have failed to deliver on their commitments to the indigenous population.

“It is deeply concerning that the BJP government at the Centre and in the state, along with its alliance partner, has failed to take meaningful steps for the development and welfare of tribal people. Those who had promised to fight for tribal rights have failed to fulfil their commitments and have left the people disappointed,” he said.

Saha also criticised the proposed electoral understanding between the BJP and Tipra Motha, recalling that the two parties had contested against each other in the TTAADC elections.

“The BJP and Tipra Motha fought against each other in the TTAADC elections and are now, depending on political circumstances, planning to contest the Village Council elections together. This clearly shows that their politics is driven by electoral interests rather than the welfare of tribal people,” he alleged.

Saha claimed that Congress remains committed to working for the rights and development of indigenous communities and said the party would continue to raise their concerns.

“We seek the support and trust of the tribal people and will contest the Village Council elections with the commitment to protect their interests and work for their development,” he said.
