Agartala, 26th December 2025:    The Tripura Pradesh Congress has strongly condemned what it described as the alarming deterioration of law and order in the state, the suppression of democratic rights, and rising incidents of violence against opposition political programmes, women, and ordinary citizens. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party termed the overall situation in the state as “horrific and deeply concerning.”

The Pradesh Congress Spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty alleged that attacks on media houses and journalists, disruption of opposition programmes, assaults on party offices, homes, and businesses, as well as incidents of murder and attempted murder, are steadily increasing. The statement further claimed that crimes against women including rape, gang rape, and cases of women being burnt alive have reached a terrifying scale.

According to the party spokesperson, ordinary citizens’ livelihoods, businesses, and daily lives are being severely disrupted. It accused ruling party-backed mafias of fueling land and contract-related violence, illegal drug trade, and human trafficking. Even within the ruling party, clashes over power and financial gains are reportedly escalating.

Despite this situation, the Congress criticized Chief Minister and Home Minister’s claims of a “zero tolerance” policy and praise for the state police, calling such assertions “divorced from reality.” The party argued that official statistics and claims of improved law and order since 2018 are completely contradictory to ground realities.

Citing recent incidents, the statement noted that within just three days, a septuagenarian woman was brutally murdered in her home at Bhuvanban in Agartala, followed by another case in which a 74-year-old woman was burnt alive in her residence at Milan Chakra.

The Congress also alleged that yesterday afternoon, barely 100 yards from the police headquarters, ruling party supporters attacked a CPI(M) meeting held with police permission and security, leaving more than five workers seriously injured. During the attack, motorcycles were vandalized, microphones destroyed, and roadside vendors looted, while police allegedly remained passive spectators.

Condemning these incidents, the Pradesh Congress questioned whether such events would also be dismissed as mere “public outrage.” The party demanded clarity on whether these brutal episodes are being portrayed as signs of law-and-order improvement and asked how much more “barbaric and inhuman” conditions citizens must endure in the future.

In conclusion, the Congress urged the Chief Minister to rise above partisan interests and act as the “Chief Minister of the people” by taking immediate and effective steps to restore the rule of law. The statement reminded that “democracy is like the lifeblood of the people,” and history has shown that citizens stand up to defend their fundamental rights when necessary.
