Agartala, 21st January 2025: Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha announced that the state has achieved the second-highest position in Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) among Northeastern states. He expressed confidence that the region would play a pivotal role in driving India’s economic growth in the coming years.
The announcement was made during the celebration of Tripura Statehood Day 2025 at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan, where Dr. Saha lauded the state’s progress and contributions to the nation’s development.
“A new era has dawned for Tripura,” he said. “This day is a tribute to the countless individuals who have played a role in shaping the state’s journey. With unwavering support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Tripura continues to stride confidently on the path of progress. The Centre has always extended prompt assistance whenever the state faced challenges, such as during the 2024 floods when additional NDRF teams, helicopters, and resources were dispatched without delay.”
The Chief Minister acknowledged the significant losses incurred during the floods but emphasized that the state managed to bounce back, thanks to the Centre’s timely aid.
Dr. Saha also addressed internal challenges, stating, “Despite attempts by some to disturb peace in the state, we have effectively maintained stability. Peace is the foundation of development, which in turn fuels tourism. With new attractions and increasing tourist footfall, Tripura is moving forward.”
Highlighting economic achievements, Dr. Saha stated that the state is now second in the Northeast for GSDP and emphasized the Northeast’s growing contributions to the national economy. He also noted Tripura’s advancement in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), transitioning from a “performer” to a “front-runner” state in the 2023-24 period.
Regarding fiscal management, the Chief Minister said, “Tripura has achieved a financial surplus of approximately ₹10,000 crore after accounting for expenditures, with a budget of ₹28,000 crore and revenue generation of ₹3,700 crore. Significant allocations have been made—25% for Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) and 10% for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)—to ensure development across all sectors.”
Dr. Saha credited the state’s progress to PM Modi’s HIRA model (Highways, Improved flight services, Railways, and Internet connectivity), which has attracted investments and spurred growth. He also highlighted initiatives such as the Tripura Startup Policy, the UNNATI schemes, and the CM Jan Arogya Yojana as examples of the government’s commitment to fostering development and good governance.
Women’s empowerment was another focus of the Chief Minister’s address. “With women making up nearly 50% of Tripura’s population, we are working to enhance their role in the state’s growth. The number of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) has now reached 56,000, reflecting our dedication to this cause,” he added.
The celebration was attended by several dignitaries, including Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy, Chief Secretary JK Sinha, DGP Amitabh Ranjan, DG (Intelligence) Anurag, and ICA Secretary PK Chakraborty.
