Police attacked outside police station over Rs 50 dispute; Two detained

Date:

Agartala, 9th September 2026 :   A dispute over a payment of just Rs 50 escalated into an alleged physical assault involving two police personnel, a shopkeeper’s family and a BSF jawan, with two persons detained in connection with the incident. Counter-allegations have also been lodged by the two sides.

According to NCC Police Station Officer-in-Charge Paritosh Das, the incident occurred on August 26 around 4–4:30 pm. Two police staff members, Pralay Roy and Pintu Das, reportedly visited a shop to purchase iron screws. After using the items to repair a door at the police station, they returned to make payment.

The shopkeeper quoted Rs 50, but the personnel allegedly sought a reduction, leading to an argument. The amount was eventually paid through GPay, the OC said. However, the situation allegedly turned violent when shopkeeper Dulal Debnath attacked Pralay and Pintu with a pump rod. A BSF jawan, identified as Upendra Singh, then allegedly joined the assault and severely beat the two police personnel.

The injured policemen were taken to GB Hospital for medical treatment. Police subsequently registered a case and detained Dulal Debnath and Upendra Singh. The OC said Dulal’s daughter has also submitted a counter-complaint, which police have taken up in accordance with law.

However, the shopkeeper’s family has presented a sharply different account. A woman from the family alleged that the two police personnel, who were in plain clothes, first assaulted her elderly grandfather during the argument over the price. She claimed her father reacted after witnessing the alleged assault.

The family further alleged that the police personnel were intoxicated and later demanded Rs 10 lakh to settle the matter and secure the release of three people. The allegations have not been independently verified.

The OC rejected the possibility of an out-of-court settlement, stating that the attack on the police personnel had been medically documented. He added that the other side would also be medically examined and their allegations assessed according to law.
