Police brutality in Khowai district: Human Rights Commission demands justice

Agartala, 12th July 2024:   A delegation from the Khowai District Human Rights Commission visited Khowai District Hospital on Friday to investigate the shocking case of police brutality against Sujit Dey, 50, a resident of Purba Ganki under Khowai police station. Sujit was hospitalized after being severely beaten during an interrogation by Ambassa sub-divisional police officer Nirupam Datta.

The incident dates back to four or five months ago when Raju Ghosh (28) from Ambassa eloped with a girl. On Wednesday afternoon, Nirupam Datta summoned Sujit Dey, Raju’s uncle to his office under the pretext of interrogation. According to sources, Sujit was brutally assaulted by Officer Datta. Witnesses reported seeing Sujit with severe injuries and bruises all over his body. “He was beaten mercilessly,” said a witness who wished to remain anonymous.

Following the assault, Sujit was initially admitted to Dhalai District Hospital. After a night of intense pain, he was transferred to Khowai District Hospital on Thursday afternoon. “His condition is critical. He is unable to speak properly due to the severity of his injuries,” said a hospital official.

The incident has sparked outrage across Khowai District. On Friday afternoon, Asish Mukherjee and Sagar Bhattacharya, Secretary and assistant secretary of the Human Rights Commission, Khowai district visited Sujit in the hospital. “This is a blatant violation of human rights and an unlawful act by a police officer,” stated Mukherjee. “The brutality displayed here is shocking and unacceptable.”

Sujit Dey recounted the ordeal, explaining that his nephew Raju Ghosh, a betel leaf merchant had eloped with a girl. Instead of interrogating Raju or his immediate family, Officer Datta targeted Sujit, calling him from Khowai to Ambassa. “They didn’t ask about the girl or Raju’s whereabouts. Instead, they beat me mercilessly,” Sujit managed to say between labored breaths.

Family members of Sujit have vowed to take legal action against SDPO Datta. “We will not let this atrocity go unpunished,” declared one of Sujit’s relatives.

The Human Rights Commission has condemned the incident and called for immediate action against the responsible officer. “This incident has caused a sensation across Khoaai. A police officer should never misuse their power in such a manner,” emphasized Sagar Bhattacharya. “We demand justice for Sujit Dey.”

As investigations continue, the Khowai District Human Rights Commission is expected to press for stringent action against Officer Nirupam Datta, ensuring such incidents do not recur in the future.
