Police warn Puja committees against forced donations, DJs in NCC area

Date:

Agartala, 8th October 2026 : The Officer-in-Charge of NCC Police Station, Paritosh Das, on Thursday issued a stern warning to Puja committees against collecting forced subscriptions, stopping vehicles on roads for donations and violating restrictions on DJ systems during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.

Das was speaking to media personnel after a meeting with representatives of Puja committees under the jurisdiction of NCC Police Station. He urged club presidents, secretaries and organisers to brief those engaged in collecting subscriptions and ensure that contributions are sought politely.

“Drivers are being harassed and forced to pay exorbitant amounts as Puja subscriptions in different areas, particularly along the National Highways. Such practices must not happen,” Das said. He added that if anyone refused to contribute, organisers should avoid arguments and resolve the matter through discussion.

He warned that complaints of coercive collection could lead to specific cases against the concerned Puja organisers. “If such incidents occur, permission for your Puja will not be granted by the NCC,” he cautioned.

During the meeting, representatives of women’s organisations also raised concerns over the use of loud DJ systems during Durga Puja and other festivals. They urged the administration to enforce clear time restrictions on music and pay special attention to the safety of women, particularly in view of incidents of violence against women.

The police made it clear that DJ systems have been completely prohibited as per instructions from higher authorities. “It is totally banned. If anyone uses DJ systems despite the restrictions, legal action will be taken,” a police official said.

Regarding donations, the police reiterated that no collection should be made at odd hours, through pressure or coercion, or by stopping vehicles on roads. Puja committees present at the meeting assured the police that they would comply with the instructions.
