Agartala, 8th October 2025 : Extreme political tension gripped Kadamtala-Kurti assembly constituency in North Tripura this morning as the ruling BJP’s threat forced the opposition CPI(M) to call off a scheduled road blockade program.
The CPI(M) had planned the protest in front of Kadamtala block, demanding the restoration of constitutional rights for the people of Kalaganga. State Secretary Amitabh Dutta, along with MLAs Islam Uddin and Zahrul Haque, led the gathering of workers and supporters around 10 am.
At the same time, the BJP organized a “Thanks-Giving Rally” to congratulate the Prime Minister and Finance Minister leading to tight security arrangements in the area. Before CPI(M) workers could begin their blockade, the BJP rally approached from behind. Facing mounting pressure and a chaotic situation, CPI(M) leaders retreated to the party office near Kadamtala Bazar.
The BJP rally led by North District President Kajal Das, Kadamtala-Kurti Mandal President Bimal Purkayastha, and Bidya Bhushan Das attempted to move toward the market. Although police, TSR and paramilitary forces barricaded their path, they eventually reached the CPI(M) office resulting in a tense standoff. A major clash was averted due to police intervention, but BJP workers reportedly shouted slogans against CPI(M) warning them to vacate within ten minutes.
Pradesh Congress Secretary Abdul Basit Chowdhury criticized CPI(M)’s handling of the situation stating, “The CPI(M) party is more timid than a tiger when in power and more timid than a cat when it loses power. Today’s incident proves that.” He claimed CPI(M) workers lacked the courage to protest due to fear of BJP’s influence.
The roadblock protest was aimed at highlighting the alleged denial of constitutional rights to the head and deputy head of Kalaganger Par Gram Panchayat, elected on June 16, 2025. CPI(M) leaders also highlighted an ongoing six-month economic blockade in the area, which has stalled development work and left essential services, including issuance of certificates, unaddressed.
During the standoff, Kadamtala Town Hall was temporarily used to detain protesters. Later, Dharmanagar DCM, in the presence of police officials, announced the unconditional release of all participants. The Dharmanagar SDM with approval from the North Tripura district’s DM assured that the issues related to the Panchayat Pradhan and Upa-Pradhan would be resolved within a week, after which the blockade was withdrawn.
