Agartala, 22nd August 2025: Launching the Pradesh Congress’ statewide agitation against the BJP, senior Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman today said that the state is drowning in addiction and the police are powerless not because they’re incapable, but because they’re shackled by the ruling party.
Speaking under the banner of the national campaign “Vote Thieves, Throne Thieves,” Barman accused the BJP of electoral fraud, institutional decay and shielding criminal elements, warning that continued attacks on opposition voices would lead to “dire consequences.”
The Gomati District Congress Committee staged a protest march and public meeting in Udaipur marking the launch of a statewide agitation under the Indian National Congress’s national campaign.
The rally was followed by a public meeting presided over by Gomati District Congress President Titon Pal. Key speakers included Pradesh Congress President Asish Kumar Saha and senior Congress MLA Roy Barman, both of whom delivered scathing critiques of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre.
Congress leaders accused the BJP of retaining power through electoral fraud and manipulation of voter rolls. They cited recent revelations from Bihar, where approximately 6.5 million names were allegedly removed from the voter list under the SIR initiative—many of whom were reportedly still alive. The leaders claimed this was part of a broader pattern of disenfranchisement and demanded accountability from the Election Commission.
Sudip Roy Barman also called on the CPI(M) to join forces with Congress to oust the BJP from power, referencing past incidents of political violence and asserting that Congress has never compromised its principles for power.
Speakers highlighted rising unemployment, soaring prices of essential goods and medicines, and deteriorating law and order in Tripura. Roy Barman pointed to a recent case in Udaipur where a teacher was allegedly beaten to death, with the accused reportedly walking free. He criticized the police for failing to uphold justice and accused them of shielding individuals linked to the ruling party.
He further alleged that drug abuse has become rampant in the state, and law enforcement has failed to act against those involved due to political pressure. Roy Barman issued a stern warning to those orchestrating attacks on opposition members, stating that continued aggression would lead to “dire consequences.”
To prevent any disruption during the protest, local police maintained a heightened security presence throughout the event.
The Congress agitation, which began in Udaipur, is set to conclude on September 7 in Kailashahar, as part of a broader campaign led by Rahul Gandhi to expose alleged corruption and governance failures across India.
