Pranajit says government exploring ways to bridge 19% DA gap

Date:

Agartala, 17th August 2026 :   The Tripura government is examining possibilities for another Dearness Allowance (DA) hike for its employees, Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said, while underlining the state’s financial limitations.

He said the government has consistently released DA based on its economic capacity and has been working to reduce the gap with Central government employees. The present difference stands at around 19 percentage points.

According to Pranajit, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha is aware of the issue and wants to reduce the gap gradually. However, he said any further increase must be backed by adequate financial resources.

The minister pointed out that Tripura no longer receives the earlier Revenue Gap Fund, which had provided around ₹4,000 crore annually. The discontinuation applies to all states, following recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission encouraging states to strengthen their own revenue generation.

Pranajit said the government has not imposed any new taxes during its eight completed years in office and has entered its ninth year without increasing the tax burden on citizens.

He maintained that the government wants to provide greater benefits to employees but must also find sustainable sources of revenue. Detailed discussions are underway, and the Chief Minister is considering various options.

The minister added that Tripura’s financial constraints have been repeatedly brought to the attention of the Prime Minister and the Union government. A decision on further DA enhancement will be taken after reviewing the state’s financial position in the coming days.
