Agartala, 18th August 2024:   Former Union Minister of State, Pratima Bhoumik, has urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to step down, asserting that her resignation is crucial for the protection of women in the state. Bhoumik accused Banerjee of overseeing a government that functions in a manner reminiscent of Taliban rule.

At a press conference, Bhoumik highlighted a horrific incident from August 8, where a young doctor was allegedly gang-raped and brutally murdered at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata. She criticized the West Bengal government and police for attempting to cover up the incident by claiming it was a suicide, despite strong protests from the medical community.

“This is not an isolated case; such incidents have been occurring regularly in West Bengal, just as they did during the CPIM’s rule,” Bhoumik said. “Women are not safe, and the situation has only worsened under Mamata Banerjee’s administration, which claims to stand for ‘Maa, Mati, Manush’ (Mother, Motherland, and People).”

Bhoumik alleged that the doctor’s body bore over 100 injury marks and condemned the state government for its handling of the case. She accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating attacks on those demanding justice and attempting to destroy evidence. “Mamata Banerjee must resign; as long as she remains in power, women in West Bengal are not safe,” she declared.

Bhoumik also referenced a recent incident in Tripura, where BJP worker Asish Pal, who was attacked during the Panchayat election results on August 12, succumbed to his injuries. She vowed to pursue justice for the deceased.
