Agartala, 3rd July 2026: The preparatory committee for the 22nd State Conference of the All India Krihsak Sabha (AIKS), scheduled to be held in Agartala from September 1 to 3, was constituted at a meeting held on Friday at Bhanu Ghosh Smriti Bhavan, Melarmath.
The conference will begin with a mass public rally at 11:30 a.m. on September 1, which the organisers aim to make one of the largest public gatherings in the state during this period.
The meeting, convened by the AIKS Tripura State Committee, was chaired by State Committee President Aghor Debbarma. Among those present were Jitendra Chaudhury, CPI(M) Tripura State Secretary and member of the Central Executive Committee of AIKS; AIKS State Vice-Presidents Motilal Sarkar and Narayan Kar; State Secretary Pabitra Kar; Ganamukti Parishad General Secretary Radhacharan Debbarma; veteran leader Salil Debbarma; CITU State Secretary Shankar Prasad Dutta; and leaders of student and youth organisations.
Opening the discussion, AIKS State Secretary Pabitra Kar traced the history of the farmers’ movement in India and Tripura. He recalled that the farmers’ organisation was founded on April 11, 1936, in Lucknow, and highlighted historic peasant struggles against British colonial rule, including the Fakir Rebellion, Sannyasi Rebellion, Santhal Rebellion, and the Indigo Revolt.
Kar also discussed the evolution of the farmers’ movement in Tripura through the literacy movement and alleged that farmers in the state have faced severe hardships during the past eight-and-a-half years under the BJP-led government.
Addressing the meeting, LoP Jitendra Chaudhury alleged that the country’s agricultural sector is facing a deep crisis due to the policies of the present Union Government.
He said India remains an agrarian country, yet agriculture and farmers have not received adequate attention despite significant progress in science and technology since Independence.
Chaudhury accused the Narendra Modi-led government of pursuing policies aimed at handing over agriculture to large corporate houses and foreign companies. He also criticised the government’s handling of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), claiming it had weakened a law that guaranteed employment to nearly 120 million rural families.
Referring to the situation in Tripura, Chaudhury alleged that the state is witnessing rising incidents of crime, financial irregularities, land scams, and the spread of narcotics, leading to social deterioration and growing concerns among the youth. He said the upcoming AIKS state conference would send a strong message against what he described as authoritarian policies at both the Centre and in the state.
Ganamukti Parishad General Secretary Radhacharan Debbarma also addressed the meeting. The meeting constituted a Preparatory Committee and an Executive Committee to oversee the successful organisation of the three-day conference. Veteran leader Salil Debbarma was appointed Chairman of the Executive Committee, while Pabitra Kar was named Convener. Radhacharan Debbarma, Ratan Das, and Amal Chakraborty were appointed Joint Conveners. In addition, seven sub-committees were formed to coordinate various aspects of the conference preparations.
