Agartala, 11th April 2025:   Valuable agar trees worth an estimated Rs 1.5 lakh were stolen from the garden of a resident in the dark of night, leaving the owner distraught and desperate for justice.

The victim Sarat Nath is a resident of Ward No. 2 of Saraspur Gram Panchayat under Kadamtala police station, reported the theft yesterday morning. According to Nath, the crime likely occurred late night of April 09 after a group of prospective buyers visited his property earlier that day.

Nath recounted, “During the day, some men from the Kalagang Par area came to inquire about purchasing my agar trees. They seemed particularly interested and even haggled over the price. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but later that night, the unthinkable happened.”

The household’s worst fears were realized when Nath ventured into his garden the next morning only to find two of his prized agar trees gone. “It felt like the ground beneath my feet had given way. Those trees represented years of care and were my only substantial asset,” he said.

Without delay, he rushed to Kadamtala police station to lodge a formal complaint, urging the authorities to take swift action. “I am completely shattered by this incident. I trusted the administration to protect us, and now I hope they catch the culprits soon,” Nath appealed.

This incident sheds light on the persistent threat of agarwood theft in the region. A notorious gang of thieves is believed to be operating in North Tripura, targeting agarwood plantations and selling the stolen goods across state borders to Assam. “The northern districts are grappling with this ongoing menace. Every week, we hear of someone losing their agarwood trees,” remarked a local resident.

The administration’s response to the complaint is awaited, and the pressure is mounting on local law enforcement to crack down on organized agarwood theft in the area. For now, Nath and others in his position can only hope that justice will prevail, and such incidents will be curbed in the future.
