Agartala, 1st August 2026: The state government has stepped up efforts to address the growing traffic congestion in Udaipur town, particularly in view of the increasing flow of pilgrims and tourists to the historic Mata Tripura Sundari Temple. As part of the initiative, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Saturday inspected several locations along the proposed alignment of a new bypass connecting Bagma with Matabari.
The proposed bypass, estimated to be around five kilometres long, is aimed at diverting through-traffic away from the congested stretches of Udaipur town and providing a smoother route for pilgrims travelling towards Matabari.
The field inspection was conducted ahead of the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR). During the visit, the Finance Minister reviewed the probable alignment, land availability and other technical considerations and directed officials to undertake a comprehensive assessment before finalising the route.
The proposed alignment is being examined through Bagma, Tepania and Jamjuri, with a possible connection near Udaipur railway station before joining National Highway-08 close to the Mata Tripura Sundari Temple.
PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte, Chief Engineer (National Highways) Subrata Banik, PWD Chief Engineer Anup Das, Director of Urban Development Dr Tamal Majumder, Chief Engineer of Tripura Urban Development Authority Nitya Kumar Jamatia, NHIDCL officials, Additional District Magistrate Subhash Acharya and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Tridip Sarkar accompanied the Minister during the inspection.
Talking to reporters, Singha Roy said the steady rise in the number of visitors to Matabari has increased vehicular pressure on Udaipur and made long-term traffic planning necessary. He said DPR preparation would begin soon after examining all technical and administrative aspects of the project.
The proposed bypass is expected to ease congestion within the town, improve the travel experience of pilgrims and strengthen connectivity to one of Tripura’s major religious and tourism destinations.
Officials believe the project, once implemented, could bring a major transformation to Udaipur’s traffic management system while supporting the town’s tourism and economic potential.
