Agartala, 30th June 2025:   Residents of northern Kailashahar staged a road blockade protest this morning over prolonged electricity issues and an acute drinking water crisis, bringing traffic to a halt and triggering police intervention.

From 10 AM, hundreds of agitated villagers gathered at the Tilabazar tri-junction and blocked both the Tilabazar-Baburbazar and Tilla Bazar-Dhaliarkandi roads. Demonstrators burned tires and demanded immediate restoration of power and drinking water supply in Ward Numbers 2 and 3 of Dhaliarkandi Gram Panchayat.

“For years now, we have been suffering due to low voltage. Fans and lights don’t work, students can’t study, and the elderly are falling ill in the heat. Despite paying regular electricity bills to Sai Computer Limited, there is no proper power supply,” said one of the protestors.

Residents alleged that repeated written and verbal complaints to Sai Computer Limited, the private electricity service provider, have gone unanswered. They also claimed that appeals to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and the Unakoti District Magistrate had yielded no results.

Adding to their woes, villagers said that the electric pump used for water supply was removed due to persistent voltage issues, leaving them without potable water. “We want the pump to be reinstalled immediately and water supply to be restored,” said another villager.

As the blockade continued, passengers and commuters were left stranded on both routes. A team of police and Tripura State Rifles personnel from Irani police station arrived at the spot to manage the situation, but initially failed to persuade the protestors to disperse.

By 12 noon, no representative from Sai Computer Limited or district administration had reached the protest site, further fueling public anger. The protestors announced that the blockade would continue until power supply is normalized and drinking water restored.
