Agartala, 9th August 2024:   Series of protests has erupted across Tripura, with demonstrators demanding a ban on Bangladeshi products in India following reports of violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as Prime Minister.

At a press conference, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) called on India to ensure the safety of Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh.

“Bangladesh is currently grappling with a state of uncertainty, violence, and chaos following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina’s government. In this time of crisis, India stands firm as a friend to all segments of Bangladeshi society,” stated Sourav Kanti Das of the VHP.

He reported that religious sites, businesses, and homes belonging to Hindus, Sikhs, and other minorities in Bangladesh have been targeted in recent attacks. “In Panchagarh district, 22 houses were vandalized; in Jhenaidah, 20 houses were destroyed; and in Jashore, 22 shops were damaged by extremists. In several districts, even Hindu crematoriums were demolished. Temples and Gurdwaras have not been spared. There is likely no district in Bangladesh that has not experienced violence and terror. It’s important to note that Hindus once made up 32% of the population in Bangladesh, but today they account for less than 8%, and they continue to face persecution,” he said.

Das further expressed concern over the safety of Hindu homes, businesses, women, children, and religious sites, including temples and Gurdwaras, in Bangladesh. “The situation for minorities in Bangladesh is deteriorating. This is alarming, and there could be attempts to cross the border into India. We must remain vigilant. It is essential that a democratic and secular government is restored in Bangladesh soon. Human rights must be protected, and there should be no obstacles to Bangladesh’s financial progress. The Indian society and government will always stand by Bangladesh in this regard,” he added.

In the meantime, another protest took place in Agartala, where locals demanded a ban and boycott of Bangladeshi products. “Our Hindu brothers and sisters in Bangladesh are under constant attack. We demand an immediate end to these assaults on Hindus and our temples. We strongly condemn these actions. If the violence does not stop, we will organize massive protests,” said one protestor.

The protests have also gained momentum on social media, with calls for the cancellation of medical visas and the suspension of power supply from Tripura to Bangladesh.
