Protests Ignite Across Tripura Over ISKCON Leader’s Arrest and Attacks on Hindu Minorities in Bangladesh

Agartala, 27th November 2024:   Widespread protests erupted across Tripura on Wednesday, sparked by the alleged unlawful arrest of Hindu leader and ISKCON member Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu, alongside rising concerns over escalating violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

Tripura, which shares an 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh, witnessed demonstrators demanding the immediate release of Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu and stronger measures to ensure the safety of Hindus in the neighboring country.

In Agartala, the right-wing organization Sanatani Hindu Sena staged a protest outside the office of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner. Participants strongly denounced the arrest and attacks, calling them “unfortunate and unacceptable.”

“The interim government in Bangladesh bears full responsibility for these ongoing atrocities. It’s shocking and barbaric how Hindu minorities and ISKCON are being targeted. ISKCON has consistently supported people in need, even during Bangladesh’s devastating floods, providing food and aid to everyone irrespective of religion. Such attacks on them are unacceptable. We will continue our protests until our demands are met. Hindus must unite against this,” a protestor told reporters.

Similar demonstrations took place at the Manughat Land Customs Station (LCS) in Unakoti District. Protestors there called for a complete halt to trade and power supply to Bangladesh, expressing their outrage at the arrest and ongoing attacks.

“We demand the immediate cessation of imports, exports, and electricity supply to Bangladesh through this land customs station. The government must act decisively against this fundamentalist regime in Bangladesh,” protestors stated.

The Forum for Protection of Minorities in Bangladesh also submitted a memorandum to the Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner in Agartala, urging the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu and condemning the atrocities.

As tensions rise, the protests signal growing frustration and demand for accountability in safeguarding minority communities in the region.
