Public protest erupts over proposed relocation of SBI Churaibari Branch

Agartala, 7th July 2025:   A wave of public unrest swept through Churaibari today as a large deputation of local residents submitted a formal protest to the State Bank of India (SBI) branch manager, opposing the proposed relocation of the Churaibari branch to another site.

Led by Raja Dhar, Mauli Das, Biswajit Deb and Salim Mia, the delegation voiced strong objections to any plan to shift the branch, which has been operating from the Churaibari Cell Tax Complex since its establishment in 2012. The protesters argued that the bank has served as a vital financial lifeline for the local population and has functioned effectively over the years.

Concerns arose after reports surfaced suggesting that the bank might be moved to a new location due to increasing customer volume and inadequate space at the current site. Locals, however, countered the rationale, stating that several larger or vacant buildings within the Cell Tax Complex itself could easily accommodate the bank’s expansion needs.

In a parallel effort, the deputation also held discussions with the Deputy Commissioner of the Cell Tax Department, seeking intervention to retain the branch within Churaibari.

“We will not accept the relocation of our only accessible bank. There are better solutions than moving it out,” said one of the representatives during the protest.

Responding to the concerns, the branch manager confirmed that the matter has been referred to senior authorities, but no final decision has been taken thus far.
