Agartala, 12th August 2026: Residents of Madhupur under Kamalasagar constituency staged a massive protest on Wednesday demanding the resignation of Minister Ratan Lal Nath, accusing him of mismanagement in the power department after previously handling the education portfolio.
Hundreds of locals blocked the Madhupur School Chowmuhani road for over two hours, raising demands that old electricity meters be restored and inflated bills be reduced. Protesters alleged that households, especially poor families, have been receiving unusually high bills, pushing them into financial distress.
Following the road blockade, demonstrators gheraoed the Madhupur electricity office and later staged another sit-in at Kamalasagar–Agartala road near the power office. Their key demand was the minister’s immediate resignation, citing unbearable electricity charges.
Police from Madhupur station struggled to disperse the crowd, but the blockade was eventually lifted after prolonged negotiations. Protesters insisted on written assurance from the senior manager of the electricity office. The written statement confirmed that no new bills would be issued and no power lines would be disconnected until the matter of inflated charges was resolved.
The agitation highlights growing public anger over rising electricity costs, with locals warning of further protests if their demands remain unmet.
