Agartala, 2nd April 2025:   The Public Works Department (PWD) in Sonamura is intensifying its efforts to ensure the quality of government development projects amidst growing complaints of irregularities and substandard construction work.

Field-oriented PWD officials are now actively monitoring the quality of various projects, stepping out of their offices and conducting regular site visits. Their commitment includes spending extended hours at construction sites to ensure that work is carried out as per the prescribed standards. A local resident commented, “It’s reassuring to see officials directly overseeing the work. We’re hopeful this change will lead to better results.”

Complaints regarding the quality of construction have been voiced by locals, panchayat representatives, and even some members of the ruling party leadership. Reports of poor road conditions in areas like Khedabari, Rabindranagar, and Srimantapur have sparked widespread concern, drawing the attention of PWD officials.

In response to allegations of substandard work, Jameson Rupini, SDO of PWD Sonamura Sub-Division stated, “We’ve taken action based on complaints. An investigation team reviewed the road in Khedabari and identified a slight deficiency in the pitch thickness—19.3 mm instead of the specified 20 mm. This issue was rectified immediately.”

To further strengthen oversight, Rupini along with Dhananjay Debbarma, Executive Engineer of Sonamura Division has increased site inspections. Additionally, Priyabrat Pal, Superintending Engineer of the Fourth Circle (R&B) conducts routine checks to uphold work standards.

Highlighting ongoing projects, Rupini revealed, “The two-story quarter complex for Sonamura Hospital is 30% complete, with 10 units across three types being constructed at a cost of Rs 2.96 crore. Moreover, a 4-km road connecting Sonamura Hospital to Mynama is underway, featuring GSB, WBM, and protective walls, with a budget of Rs 3.75 crore.”

Efforts also include the construction of roads between Battali and Durlavnarayan, and Rangamatia and Durlavnarayan. As the PWD intensifies its quality control measures, locals remain cautiously optimistic about the outcomes.
