Agartala, 2nd April 2025:   Two journalists were attacked in separate incidents yesterday in Sonamura subdivision sparking outrage among the local press personnel. Senior journalist Sanjay Acharya and Boxanagar Press Club president Prabhat Ghosh have filed complaints with the Melaghar and Kalamchaura police stations, respectively following threats and physical assaults.

In the first incident, Sanjay Acharya, a senior journalist and newspaper agent for the Dainik Sambad was distributing newspapers in the Thakurpara Chowmuhani area of Melaghar around 10:30 am when he was confronted by Kanti Sarkar, a resident of Himmatpur in Kalikrishna Nagar gram panchayat. Sarkar allegedly insulted, abused and threatened Acharya after demanding coverage of his area and being refused. Acharya later filed a complaint at Melaghar Police Station alleging that Sarkar had a history of harassment stemming from a decade-old report on his illegal rubber plantation. “I have faced repeated insults and threats from him over the years, but this time he crossed the line,” Acharya stated.

Melaghar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Debasish Saha assured legal action against the accused. “We are investigating the matter and will ensure justice,” Saha said.

The second incident took place in the North Kalamchoura Chowmuhoni area, where journalist Prabhat Ghosh was reporting on cannabis farming. Ghosh was attacked by a local farmer, Jamshed Mia, who allegedly threatened him with death and physically assaulted him. Locals intervened to rescue Ghosh, who later filed a complaint at Kalamchoura Police Station. “Journalists should not have to fear for their lives while doing their job,” Ghosh remarked.

The Sonamura Press Club has condemned both incidents and demanded enhanced security measures for journalists. “These attacks are unacceptable. Authorities must act swiftly to protect the press,” a member of the club stated.
