Agartala, 1st April 2025: Rajnagar village in Anandabazar witnessed a contentious arbitration meeting yesterday led by members of the Nath community. The gathering took place at the market shed in the Anandabazar area, escalated into a demand for the eviction of the Das family from the village. Rajnagar Gram Panchayat Pradhan Amar Debnath, along with Randhir Debnath, Rajendra Debnath and Kanti Gopal Debnath were present at the meeting.
Allegations were raised against Sunil Das and his son Biplab Das, residents of Rajnagar accusing them of making derogatory remarks against the Nath community. The duo was also accused of filing repeated false cases against villagers, which reportedly fueled the community’s demand for their ousting. Speaking on behalf of the community, one attendee remarked, “The actions of the Das family have created an unbearable atmosphere in the village. We demand justice and a resolution to this prolonged issue.”
The meeting took a dramatic turn as a group of agitated youths spilled onto the Dharmanagar-Kailasahar road, staging a blockade that brought traffic to a standstill. Local commuters faced significant disruption before the Dharmanagar police swiftly intervened. “Our priority was to restore calm and ensure no harm was done,” said a police official, who confirmed that the blockade was lifted after constructive discussions with the protesters.
However, the meeting left a cloud of uncertainty and controversy. Following the discussions, a case was filed by some attendees at the Dharmanagar police station against the Das family. When approached for their statement, the Das family reportedly did not respond, leaving many questions unanswered.
Some locals disclosed that the tensions trace back to an earlier incident involving a student from the Das family. This student, who had played a role in a road blockade protesting a teacher’s transfer at Jiban Tripura Vidyalaya, had allegedly faced intimidation attempts by certain individuals in the village. The student filed a police complaint, which some believe may have instigated the current demands for eviction. “There are vested interests at work here. This is not just about recent allegations—it’s an attempt to sideline the Das family,” claimed a resident, requesting anonymity.
Even as the police maintain control of the situation, unease lingers in the village. The ongoing tension between the two communities has fueled concerns among locals. A locality elder, urging administrative intervention, stated, “We cannot allow these disputes to fester. Without a fair and transparent resolution, the situation may spiral further out of control.”
