Agartala, 2nd October 2026 : Advocate Ratan Datta has been elected Chairman of the Bar Council of Tripura, while Madhumita Chowdhury was elected Vice-Chairman for a two-year term following an internal election held among the council members.
According to Presiding Officer Kakali Deb, 15 members participated in the election. Datta secured 8 votes, defeating Prashanta Sen Chowdhury, who received 3 votes, and Shishir Chakraborty, who polled 4 votes.
In the Vice-Chairman election, Madhumita Chowdhury secured 11 votes, while Pulak Saha received 4 votes.
Speaking after his election, Datta said his priority would be to work for the welfare of the legal fraternity without any political discrimination. He said he had previously served as Chairman and had now been entrusted with another two-year term.
“We do not engage in politics here; we work for everyone and with everyone, irrespective of party affiliations or ideologies,” Datta said, adding that his focus would remain on serving all members of the Bar Council.
He expressed gratitude to the members for re-electing him and said he would continue working for the Bar without considering political affiliations.
Kakali Deb said the election process was conducted peacefully and in a spirit of camaraderie. She said she had served as Vice-Chairman earlier and performed the role of Presiding Officer for Friday’s election.
She said the council’s earlier election for 14 posts was held on February 14, 2024, with three women members elected unopposed to reserved seats and 11 others elected through contests. Subsequently, advocate Parmita Dhar was co-opted as a member in September following her appointment by the Chief Justice of Tripura.
After the latest election, all 15 members took their oaths of office and will now manage the affairs of the Bar Council of Tripura. Deb also appreciated Secretary Ranagopal Chakraborty for overseeing the election process.
