Agartala, 20th May 2026: Consumers across the state are continuing to face a shortage of sugar at fair price ration shops, with no clear indication yet from the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department regarding the availability or distribution schedule for the current month.
According to ration dealer sources, sugar meant for April distribution has still not reached many fair price shops, leaving both dealers and consumers uncertain about supply timelines. Dealers also reported that, as of now, no collection of payment for sugar allocation has been initiated by the department, further adding to confusion regarding stock release.
In the absence of official clarification, ration dealers believe that sugar may not yet have been dispatched to local warehouses. However, there has been no formal confirmation from the department regarding stock status or delays.
Consumers, meanwhile, are reportedly returning empty-handed from ration shops on multiple visits. Many are also expressing concern over rising market prices of sugar, which is increasing financial pressure on households that depend on subsidized supplies.
The department regularly conducts review meetings on food distribution, attended by senior officials, including administrative heads and secretaries. However, stakeholders say that clear communication on ground-level supply issues remains limited, leading to continued uncertainty in the public distribution system.
At present, there has been no official statement explaining the delay or confirming when sugar distribution will resume across ration shops.
