Agartala, 14th October 2024: Tensions ran high at Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital and Tripura Medical College at Hapania here on Sunday evening as the relatives of Tapan Das, a 40-year-old man from Madhya Brajapur in Bishalgarh accused the hospital’s doctors of negligence leading to his untimely death. Das, who had initially been admitted to GB Hospital after falling ill, was later shifted to Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital and Tripura Medical College for better treatment when his condition did not improve.
A relative recounting the events stated, “He was admitted to the medicine department and later shifted to the ICU. The doctors informed us that Tapan was suffering from a kidney problem. He vomited blood in the ICU and despite us buying all the prescribed medicines his condition worsened.”
Das’ family raised serious allegations claiming that the doctors on duty continued to prescribe medicines while knowing he was in critical condition. “We spent thousands of rupees on medicines, but nothing worked. My niece, who is a nurse checked his pulse herself and found him dead, yet the doctors insisted he was still alive,” one family member stated.
The situation escalated when Das was rushed to ILS Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. His family, angered and grieving, returned to Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital and Tripura Medical College with his body and protested accusing the doctors of malpractice. “The doctors here are only treating patients in name. They didn’t try to save him,” one relative shouted, calling the doctors “murderers.”
Das’ family filed an official complaint with the Amtali police station against the hospital staff. The police, along with TSR forces were deployed to the hospital to control the unrest. Speaking to media personnel, the deceased’s niece presented what she described as “sensational information,” blaming the doctors for her uncle’s death. The family alleges that the doctors were engaged in unethical practices including secretly selling unused medicines.
As investigations begin, the hospital and authorities are yet to release an official statement.
