Agartala, 14th October 2024: As Kojagari Lakshmi Puja approaches next Wednesday, Hindus in the entire state are fervently preparing to welcome Sri Sri Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Markets across the state have been bustling since Monday morning.
However, for many lower-income families, the preparations are akin to an uphill struggle due to soaring prices. The cost of idols and puja accessories has skyrocketed this year, with the price of idols tripling compared to last year. This surge has discouraged many from venturing to the idol market, though buying an idol remains a non-negotiable tradition.
Families are finding creative ways to cut costs elsewhere to afford the idols, with some purchasing talents from fairs to resell. Buyers note that idols from Melaghar are particularly exquisite this year. Sellers explain the price hike, citing increased raw material costs and a labor shortage, which has driven up wages and subsequently the price of idols.
Despite the unusual spike in fruit prices as well, the importance of conducting the religious rituals for Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is paramount. Mothers and sisters across Udaipur are dedicated to bringing home the goddess of wealth, making meticulous preparations for the upcoming festivities.
