Agartala, 8th June 2026: A family from the remote Sadananda Para area near the Dumboor reservoir, around 12 km from Gandachhara subdivision headquarters, is reportedly facing serious difficulties due to the lack of essential official documents and access to government welfare schemes.
Jumia Gajendra Reang, belonging to the indigenous Reang community, lives with his wife and three children in a five-member household. Although the family falls under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, they have not been able to obtain a BPL ration card.
The main hurdle is the absence of a birth certificate for their eight-year-old son, Darendra Reang. Without this document, the family has also been unable to apply for an Aadhaar card, which is necessary for accessing ration benefits and several welfare services.
Reang stated that he has made multiple visits over the past several years to the local panchayat office and the sub-divisional food and civil supplies office. However, he was repeatedly told to submit the child’s birth certificate, which the family does not have. Due to limited awareness of administrative procedures and low literacy levels, the family says they remain stuck in a cycle of documentation challenges.
The household has also been affected by a recent natural disaster, when a cyclone caused a tree to fall on their government-allotted home. The incident badly damaged the tin roof and overall structure. Although applications were submitted to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office and block administration seeking repair assistance, no relief has been provided so far.
The family depends mainly on jhum cultivation and small-scale farming for survival, but continues to struggle to meet basic daily needs.
Local residents and community members have appealed to the administration to urgently step in, assist the family in obtaining necessary documents, ensure access to ration benefits, and provide financial support for repairing their damaged house.
