Agartala, 6th August 2026: The Pashchim Gurupada Colony Junior Basic School under Jampui Jala subdivision presents a striking picture of the declining enrolment in Tripura’s government schools. The school currently has six teachers for just six students, with attendance sometimes falling to a single student and, on some days, to zero.
Although the school’s infrastructure is reportedly in reasonable condition, the severe shortage of students has raised questions about its viability.
A teacher, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the presence of nearby privately run schools is a major reason behind the decline. One private school is located close to the government school, while another is barely 200 metres away. Parents and students are reportedly being attracted by assurances of better education and facilities.
