Agartala, 24th May 2025:  Frustrated by a prolonged drinking water crisis, residents of Birendra Roaja Para (Ward No. 04) in Bishnupur ADC Village under Rupaichhari RD Block staged a protest today by blocking the Bishnupur-Rupaichhari road. The blockade began at 9 am, was an outcry against the administration’s repeated assurances that failed to resolve the issue.

The scarcity of drinking water has worsened in recent weeks, pushing residents to a breaking point. Despite numerous complaints to the local leadership, village council, and relevant authorities, no effective solution was provided. Protesters, determined to make their voices heard, obstructed the road using tree trunks, bamboo, and bricks, bringing traffic to a standstill and causing significant disruptions for commuters.

One protester, a local woman, voiced the community’s frustration, stating, “Drinking water is our basic right. We have repeatedly approached the administration, only to return empty-handed. Today, we refuse to remain silent. We are compelled to take to the streets.”

Authorities responded to the crisis in the afternoon. At around 2:30 pm, workers from the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department (DWSA) arrived at the scene along with mechanics, assuring residents that immediate measures would be taken to resolve the issue. With the promise of action, the blockade was lifted.

This protest highlights the ongoing neglect of infrastructure in tribal-dominated remote areas. Residents question why their repeated complaints failed to prompt action earlier. The incident raises concerns about accountability and governance in public service delivery.

Villagers warn that if the problem persists, they will escalate their movement further.
