Agartala, 3rd July 2024:   A blockade staged on Wednesday in the Gachirampara area along the Dasda-Anandbazar road under the Kanchanpur subdivision, as residents demanded immediate road repairs. This 13 km stretch, a vital lifeline for approximately 50,000 people, has been neglected by the Public Works Department (PWD) for the past five years despite numerous complaints.

According to local sources, the deteriorating condition of the road has led to frequent accidents, causing fatalities and injuries. “The road is a death trap,” said one resident, expressing the community’s frustration. “We’ve been promised repairs since 2023, but nothing has been done.”

Residents also highlighted the significant disruptions caused by the road’s poor state, particularly for students and expectant mothers. “During the monsoon, it’s impossible for our children to reach their schools safely,” lamented another local.

The blockade commenced at 5 AM, resulting in long traffic jams on both sides of the road. Officials, including the Deputy Collector and Magistrate (DCM) of Kanchanpur subdivision and representatives from Dasda RD Block, arrived at the scene to negotiate with the protestors. Despite lengthy discussions, the residents remained firm in their demands.

“The district magistrate of North Tripura must come here and address our concerns directly,” one protestor insisted. “We won’t lift the blockade until our demands are met.”

As the situation takes place, the residents’ determination signals a pressing need for the authorities to address their grievances promptly. The blockade serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of maintaining infrastructure that supports daily life and safety.
