Agartala, 30th September 2026 : Residents of Ranirbazar Ramthakur Choumuhani have raised concerns over the proposed widening of the national highway, fearing that several families could lose their homes if land is acquired disproportionately from one side of the road.
The residents said they support the highway expansion and understand its importance for improving connectivity and public convenience. However, they urged the authorities to ensure that the alignment is finalised in a manner that minimises displacement and distributes land acquisition fairly on both sides.
Speaking about the proposed alignment near the Majlishpur area, residents said they would be willing to surrender their houses if necessary to facilitate a properly straightened road. At the same time, they questioned the need to acquire residential properties if the road alignment itself is not being straightened.
“We want the road to be constructed and we support development, but not at the cost of sacrificing our lives and homes,” a resident said.
According to local residents, the alignment in the area has been surveyed and measured numerous times in the past. They claimed that measurements have repeatedly been taken over stretches of around 100 to 150 feet, while raising questions over why land should be acquired predominantly from one side.
Residents of Road No. 4 and nearby Majlishpur also expressed concern that many affected families are reluctant to speak openly due to fear and uncertainty. They said several families have been living in the area for generations, with some claiming a history of 100 to 200 years.
The residents appealed to the authorities to consult the affected population before finalising the alignment and to explore alternatives that would allow the highway to be constructed without unnecessary displacement.
They stressed that they are not opposed to the highway project, but want the construction to proceed with public consent and with proper consideration for families whose homes and land may be affected.
