Residents demand closure of “Avel Fresh” chicken farm over stench and flies at Kanchanmala

Agartala, 19th April 2025:   The lives of residents in the Kanchanmala area of the Sadar subdivision have been thrown into disarray due to the foul stench and an infestation of flies emanating from a broiler chicken farm named “Avel Fresh.” Despite repeated complaints, the administration’s inaction has left the locals disillusioned.

Established several years back, “Avel Fresh” sprawls over a vast area and focuses on hatching chicks from eggs produced on-site. While the farm generates significant revenue, its operations have reportedly put nearby residents in peril. “The smell is unbearable, and the flies have made our homes unlivable. It’s like having a bee nest inside the house,” lamented a local resident who wished to remain anonymous.

Efforts by state environmental officials to investigate the issue have been criticized as superficial. “We’ve raised our concerns, but instead of addressing them, officials only speak to the farm management. Every time, they claim the farm is operating without any issues,” said another resident, voicing the locality’s frustrations.

Local authorities have been accused of turning a blind eye. Earlier investigations into the farm allegedly concluded with favorable reports for the management, even as residents continue to bear the brunt of the pollution. “The administration officials were won over by pleasantries during their visits. It’s shameful how easily they dismissed the suffering of people in the area,” one resident remarked indignantly.

The locals failing to endure the deteriorating conditions any longer are now mobilizing to escalate their complaints. It has been revealed that a mass signature campaign is underway to address the issue at higher levels of governance. “We are preparing a petition to submit to the District Magistrate of the West District and the Union Minister for Environment and Pollution Control. This must end,” shared an agitated local leader.

The residents have one clear demand: shut down the “Avel Fresh” farm entirely. They argue that unless the farm ceases its operations, the region will remain plagued by the unrelenting stench and the nuisance of flies. “Our patience has run out. This isn’t just about inconvenience; it’s about our quality of life,” stressed a local activist.
