Agartala, 21st June 2024: The road in the Kurti Gram Panchayat area under the Kadamtala block has deteriorated significantly sparking widespread discontent among residents. This road is crucial for the daily commute of residents in Wards No. 4 and 7 has been in a state of disrepair for a prolonged period, despite repeated appeals for renovation.
The current MLA of the 54-Kurti-Kadamtala assembly constituency, Islam Uddin, has been a prominent figure in local politics, holding various positions including the head of the Gram Panchayat and Vice Chairman of the Kadamtala Panchayat Samiti before being elected as MLA. Despite his long tenure and repeated re-elections, residents claim that no substantial efforts have been made to improve the road’s condition.
Islam Uddin, a member of the CPIM party, secured his MLA position even as the rest of Tripura saw a shift in power to the BJP in 2018. He was re-elected in 2023. However, the residents of Kurti Gram Panchayat have expressed frustration over his inaction regarding the road’s renovation, particularly as it passes right in front of his residence.
In the 2019 Gram Panchayat elections, Subrata Shabadkar of the BJP was elected as the Pradhan of Kurti Gram Panchayat. Residents allege that promises made during the election campaign to renovate the road have not been fulfilled. The road has worsened further due to recent heavy rains, making it nearly impassable for cars and bikes and difficult for pedestrians.
The dissatisfaction with local governance transcends party lines, as both BJP and CPIM representatives in the ward, Yuveda Khatun and Taj Uddin respectively, have faced criticism. Accusations of neglect and unfulfilled promises have led to threats of an election boycott, with residents staging protests to demand tangible action.
The continuous protests underscore the community’s refusal to accept what they see as empty rhetoric regarding infrastructure development. The situation remains tense as residents await concrete measures to address their concerns.
