Agartala, January 28: The situation in Teliamura RD block area remains tense as two groups of residents have been blocking the road since Saturday over the vandalism of 14 under-construction houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The houses, located in the Kalai Para of North Brahmacherra area, were allegedly damaged by miscreants who wrote controversial words on the street on Friday night.
The residents of the affected area staged a protest on Saturday morning by dropping tree logs on the Brahmacherra-Kankracherra road, demanding action against the culprits. They claimed that the incident was instigated by a comment made by a top leader of a political party in the state and that similar incidents had occurred in the past. The police and the administration officials visited the spot and assured the protesters that the matter would be investigated and the offenders would be arrested soon. The road blockade was lifted after Minister Bikash Debbarma intervened and promised security to the residents.
However, no arrests have been made so far and the police have not given any update on the investigation. On Sunday, another group of residents, who were accused of being involved in the vandalism, joined the road blockade and raised counter-allegations. They denied any role in the incident and said that they were being targeted by the other group. They also threatened to take away the domestic animals of the other group if they tried to disrupt peace and order in the area.
The OC of Teliamura police station and other administrative officials rushed to the scene again on Sunday, but they failed to pacify the situation. The road blockade continued for the second day, causing inconvenience to the general public. The administration has been accused of being ineffective and negligent in handling the situation. The tension between the two groups has escalated and there is a fear of further violence in the area.
