Road blockade in North Tripura, residents demands road repair

BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 17th June 2025:  The residents of Ichai Joypur staged a road blockade on the Dharmanagar-Kadamtala main road in the Lalcherra area today. The protestors demanded immediate repairs to the severely damaged stretch. The blockade began at around 10:00 Am and continued until 12:30 Pm—lasting for nearly two and a half hours. Consequently, long traffic congestion developed on both sides of the road.

According to the protestors, nearly a year and a half ago, local MLA Jadab Lal Nath had laid the foundation stone for converting this road into a 12-foot wide paved road, promising its reconstruction. However, despite the passage of time, no visible progress has been made, leading to resentment among the locals.

It is reported that the main road of Ichai Joypur village under the 55- Bagbassa Assembly Constituency has remained in critical condition for a long time. The road from Lalcherra to Ichai Joypur has now turned into a death trap, causing immense suffering for the local residents.

Due to severe condition of the road, no vehicles—including ambulances, auto-rickshaws, or motorbikes—can pass through it. School-going children are also facing severe hardships, and transporting patients to hospitals has become extremely difficult.

Upon receiving news of the protest, police from Kadamtala Police Station rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control. The protesting locals reiterated their demand for urgent road repairs and expressed their frustration, saying, “We’ve been hearing promises for a long time, but nothing has materialised. If the work doesn’t begin soon, we will be forced to launch a larger movement.”

Meanwhile, upon hearing about the blockade, Kalacherra Block Development Officer (BDO), Amit Chandra rushed to the spot. Taking advantage of his presence, the villagers demanded immediate action to begin the repairment work emphasizing that relief could return to their daily lives.

Responding to their demands, BDO Amit Chandra promptly initiated temporary repair work by arranging for bricks and sand to be laid on the damaged stretch within half an hour. Seeing that their demands were finally being addressed, the villagers lifted the blockade and restored traffic movement.
