Agartala, 27th July 2026 :   In a major anti-narcotics operation, police at Churaibari check-post under Bazarichara police station seized a huge consignment of contraband cough syrup worth over Rs 3 crore on Monday afternoon. The illicit consignment was hidden inside a 12-wheeler truck carrying cartons of eggs.

The driver, identified as Salam Ansari from Mohammad Bazar area under Suri subdivision of Birbhum district, West Bengal, was arrested. Preliminary investigation revealed that the cough syrup bottles were procured from Ranchi, Jharkhand, and were being smuggled into Agartala concealed within egg cartons.

During the search led by Officer-in-Charge Niranjan Das, police recovered 31,650 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup packed in 422 cartons, each containing 75 bottles. To avoid suspicion, racks of eggs were placed on top of the cartons.

Police confirmed that the seized narcotics have a black-market value exceeding ₹3 crore. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and the accused will be produced before the District CJM Court on Tuesday.

Local residents have expressed satisfaction over the frequent anti-drug drives by Churaibari police, which they believe are crucial in curbing the menace of drug trafficking in the region.
