Agartala, 18th May 2026: Police in Salema have registered a case in connection with an alleged financial scam involving nearly Rs 50 crore, in which a serving woman constable and a Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel have been named among the accused.
According to police sources, a complaint was filed by Sanjana Debbarma, following which Salema Police Station initiated a formal investigation. Acting on the complaint, police arrested two accused Menaka Debbarma, a woman constable posted at East Agartala Women’s Police Station, and Ajit Debbarma, a rifleman of TSR 14th Battalion.
The arrested duo was produced before the Kamalpur Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court, where the investigating officer, Officer-in-Charge Deepak Das of Salema Police Station, sought seven days of police custody for interrogation. After hearing both sides, the court granted seven days of police remand. The accused will next be produced before the court on May 25.
The investigation reportedly began after a video surfaced on social media showing bundles of currency notes — including Rs 500, Rs 200, and Rs 100 denominations — at the residence of constable Pijush Debbarma under Salema police limits. In the video, his wife Nandarani Debbarma was allegedly seen displaying the cash to a friend, which triggered widespread public attention and suspicion over the source of the money.
Following the viral video, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha reportedly took cognizance of the matter and directed senior police officials to conduct a detailed probe. Subsequently, the Director General of Police assigned DIG Northern Range Rati Ranjan Debnath to oversee the investigation.
A special team was formed under the supervision of SDPO Nirupan Dutta and Dhalai District SP Rishikesh Desai, along with Salema police, which conducted searches at the constable’s residence and carried out interrogations.
During questioning, police reportedly identified Sanchana Debbarma — a health department employee — as a key link in the alleged network. She was also taken into custody for interrogation. Further questioning of Nandarani Debbarma and her husband Pijush Debbarma allegedly revealed additional links, including Ajit Debbarma and his wife Menaka Debbarma.
Police sources also indicated that another TSR personnel, Bijay Debbarma, and a young doctor related to Sanchana Debbarma’s family may be connected to the case. However, officials have remained tight-lipped, stating that the investigation is ongoing and details cannot be disclosed at this stage.
