Agartala, 16th January 2026:  Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma on Friday announced that the state has secured more than Rs 57 crore for the modernisation and overall development of the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary in Sepahijala district.

The announcement was made during the minister’s visit to the zoo after foreign tourists raised concerns over plastic waste and unhygienic conditions within the sanctuary premises.

Responding to the complaints, Debbarma said he personally inspected the area after receiving reports of plastic garbage scattered across parts of the sanctuary, which had impacted cleanliness and the experience of visitors.

“I visited the sanctuary following complaints from foreign tourists. Steps are being taken to collect plastic waste and dispose of it safely. There may have been some lapses on that particular day. However, visitors also need to act responsibly. The administration and zoo authorities are making continuous efforts to ensure a clean and plastic-free environment so that tourists do not face such problems,” the minister said.

He further informed that a development plan approved by the Central Zoo Authority is already in place. The funds received under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) will be utilised to upgrade the zoo in line with international standards.

“The zoo will be developed in all aspects. We are also exploring the introduction of new species from outside the state as part of the modernisation initiative,” Debbarma added.
