Agartala, 5th November 2025: A controversy has broken out in Sabroom subdivision following allegations that a government-built indoor stadium is being rented out for commercial purposes instead of serving its intended sporting function.
The indoor stadium at Harina Tilla under Doulbari Gram Panchayat in Satchand RD Block was inaugurated by the then Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on December 1, 2022 was envisioned as a modern facility to encourage local sporting talent. However, it has reportedly been converted into temporary housing for around 40 to 45 out-of-state workers engaged in electricity grid projects.
Sources said the workers have been residing there for nearly half a year, paying Rs 15,000 in monthly rent. The decision to rent out the facility was allegedly made with the consent of senior members of the Doulbari Panchayat, and the rent amount is being deposited into the bank account of one Gita Rani Nath.
The development has sparked criticism from locals, who view it as a misuse of public infrastructure built with government funds. Many residents have demanded that the Satchand Block Administration clarify how the sports facility was permitted to be used as a dormitory and whether proper authorization was obtained.
