Santirbazar: Police express frustration over lack of cooperation from doctors

Agartala, 7th December 2025:   Santirbazar police station staff has voiced strong dissatisfaction over what they describe as repeated non-cooperation from doctors at the South Tripura District Hospital, particularly in cases involving drunk driving.

Police officials informed that the subdivision has witnessed a sharp rise in road accidents in recent months, most of which are linked to alcohol consumption while driving. To curb this trend, police have intensified enforcement and regularly detain offenders. As part of legal procedure, suspects are taken to the district hospital for medical examination, which requires the cooperation of doctors.

However, police allege that doctors often show reluctance in conducting proper medical tests. Last night, officers detained a youth for riding a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol. When taken to the hospital, a duty doctor reportedly refused to cooperate and later issued a certificate declaring the youth medically fit. This contradicted the youth’s own admission that he had consumed alcohol at a social event before driving.

Subsequently, another doctor at the same hospital examined the youth and confirmed in writing that he had indeed consumed alcohol. The conflicting reports have raised serious concerns among police about the reliability of medical support in law enforcement.

Second OC Sub-Inspector Samir Biswas told reporters that such incidents are not isolated. “Whenever we bring individuals suspected of drunk driving, doctors often hesitate to conduct medical examinations. Even after informing the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. J.S. Reang, the problem persists,” Biswas said.

Police argue that inconsistent medical reports undermine their ability to enforce the law effectively. “If the same person has to undergo medical tests twice to establish the truth, how can we carry out our other duties?” Biswas questioned.

The police have urged doctors at South Tripura District Hospital to extend full cooperation in cases involving drunk driving and other law-and-order situations, stressing that medical support is essential for ensuring public safety.
