Agartala, 21st August 2026: The Purna Joy Riangpara Lower Basic School in Gaddang area under Shantirbazar subdivision continues to face severe infrastructure problems, with students reportedly struggling due to inadequate drinking water, poor sanitation and deplorable road connectivity.
According to local residents, the school has long lacked adequate access to safe drinking water. Although a hand pump or water supply facility was reportedly available earlier, the school currently does not have sufficient drinking water for its students and teachers. Residents also alleged that the school toilet remains unhygienic, creating difficulties for students from Classes I to V.
The school is also reportedly facing a shortage of basic infrastructure. Classes are being conducted in only one room, while just two teachers are currently responsible for teaching the students, according to local sources.
Residents said the drinking water crisis extends beyond the school to the wider Purna Joy Riangpara area. Several families allegedly have to purchase drinking water due to the shortage of safe water. Locals claimed that the situation has adversely affected schoolchildren, particularly during periods of illness when adequate sanitation facilities become even more important.
Poor road connectivity is another major concern. Villagers alleged that the roads in the area have remained in a poor condition for years, forcing students to walk long distances to reach the school. The condition of the roads also reportedly creates difficulties in transporting emergency patients to hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
Nandlal Tripura, who donated land for the school, expressed his dissatisfaction over the lack of visible development in the area. He alleged that despite several longstanding problems, adequate development initiatives have not been undertaken. He claimed that residents had not received the expected support from elected representatives since 2018.
Nandlal Tripura and other residents have urged the government to ensure safe drinking water, improve the school’s infrastructure and repair the roads at the earliest.
Locals have also questioned whether assurances made during elections regarding the resolution of their problems have been adequately implemented. They appealed to Shantirbazar MLA Pramod Riang and other concerned representatives to visit the village and take immediate steps to address the drinking water, sanitation, road and other infrastructure-related issues.
The residents have also urged Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha to take the matter seriously and ensure necessary intervention for the development of the area.
