Agartala, 3rd August 2025: Concerns over lax security at Agartala’s GB Hospital intensified after a disturbing assault on a doctor by the kin of a patient in the emergency ward in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Despite its status as a major referral hospital, recurring incidents of theft, violence, and negligence have thrown its safety protocols into question.
The latest flashpoint took place around 3 am when Dr. Liton Das was allegedly attacked by two individuals identified as Bapan Sarkar and Tapan Sarkar after he administered emergency treatment to a critically ill patient, Bimal Sarkar, who had reportedly consumed poison mixed with alcohol. Both attackers claimed to be the patient’s sons.
“They threw Dr. Das to the ground and beat him mercilessly despite our prompt medical response,” said Dr. Avik Deb, who witnessed the incident and was also verbally abused. “We’ve informed the police and submitted a written complaint to health department officials and the medical superintendent. They’ve assured us the matter will be taken seriously, but we will wait only until Monday,” he added.
Dr. Deb further added, “We handled 110 patients from Saturday afternoon to night. Providing critical care under the threat of violence is unacceptable. If the authorities continue to ignore our repeated calls for better security, we may have no choice but to go on strike.”
Hospital sources confirm that GB Hospital has faced multiple allegations in recent months, ranging from robbery to staff harassment, yet little action has followed. The emergency department staff emphasized that without immediate intervention, it will be increasingly difficult to deliver services safely.
As tensions rise, all eyes are on the health department’s response in the coming days.
