Agartala, 30th October 2024: A seminar on HIV/AIDS took place today at Vivekananda Sarda Centenary Bhavan in Dharmanagar, attracting students from various schools. The event was attended by State Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, Assistant Superintendent of Police Jeremy Darlong, Additional District Magistrate Biplab Das, Dharmanagar Municipal Council Chairman Mitali Das Sen, Uttar Tripura Zilla Parishad’s Sabhadipati Aparna Nath, Chief Medical Officer of North district and expert doctors. Senior Officer of the ICA Department Dilip Debbarma was also present.
Speakers at the seminar discussed the consequences of HIV and emphasized the role of drug addiction, particularly among young people aged 18 to 40, in spreading the virus. “Addiction to drugs is a significant cause of HIV spread in our community,” noted one of the speakers. They also highlighted sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) as a contributing factor.
Despite successful anti-drug operations in Damram, Kanchanpur, and Dharmanagar, the lack of proper awareness among the public is causing HIV to spread. “HIV is not a communicable disease in the traditional sense but is transmitted through drug use or STDs,” an expert explained. The speakers stressed that increasing awareness is crucial in reducing HIV infections.
NLU-Tripura’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yogesh Pratap Singh, stated, “Awareness is the only way to combat this disease. The more people are informed, the more we can prevent HIV infections.” The principal also emphasized the importance of attending such seminars, urging students to seek proper advice from their teachers.
The seminar concluded with a call for continued education and awareness to address the HIV/AIDS crisis effectively. “We need large-scale participation in every seminar to spread awareness and reduce HIV infections,” said a seminar coordinator.
