Agartala, 28th November 2024: Janjatiya Gourav Diwas is observed on 15th November every year since 2021 on the Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, a Tribal Freedom fighter. To commemorate this day, the Department of Kokborok organized Seminar on Janjatiya Gaurav Divas on November 26 last, to celebrate and honour the rich cultural heritage and contributions of the tribal communities.
The seminar started with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the dignitaries followed by a welcome song. Sanjit Debbarma, Assistant Professor & HoD of Kokborok delivered the Welcome Address. The resource person for the seminar was Dr. Jekap Halam, Assistant Professor & HoD of Philosophy. Dr. Jekap Halam enlightened on the life of Bhagwan Birsa Munda and his contribution towards the upliftment of the tribal communities. He explained in detail how the revolts by Birsa Munda and his followers had impacted the British Raj, which was evident from the Tenancy Reforms that had to be implemented.
Dr. Santanu Majumder, Assistant Professor & HoD of Chemistry also expressed his thoughts on the importance and significance of observing Janajatiya Gaurav Divas.
Dr. Abhijit Sarkar, Principal of GDC, Kamalpur emphasized the importance of learning from the life of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, who at a very early age made remarkable contribution to society. Dr. Sarkar explained how Birsa Munda worked to refine and reform the religious practices, discouraged many superstitious rites, brought in new tenets and prayers, reformed many habits, restored and revived the tribal pride and ignited the spark in the minds of the masses. He also remembered other tribal freedom fighters namely, Sidhu and Kanhu Murmu, Veer Narayan Singh, Alluri Seetha Ram Raju, Rani Gaidinliu, and others.
At the end there was a beautiful performance of Hojagiri Dance by the students. The students greatly benefited from the seminar and it was indeed a successful one.
