Agartala, 7th October 2025 : Residents of Halaichhara area under Golakpur ADC Village and Sarojini Gram Panchayat in Kailashahar have been facing an acute drinking water crisis since September 26, after the supply was completely cut off. For the past 10 to 12 days, the two villages have been struggling without access to safe drinking water.

Angered by the prolonged negligence of the administration and the indifference of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, villagers—both men and women—took to the streets this afternoon. They staged a road blockade on the main route connecting Ishan Choudhury Para to Srirampur.

According to residents, the water supply pipeline from the Iron Removal Plant in Golakpur village burst days ago, but officials from the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department have taken no steps to repair it. Despite repeated complaints, no effective action was taken. Officials reportedly cited the closure of offices during the festive season and a shortage of workers as excuses for the delay.

Villagers alleged that even temporary measures to supply water could have been arranged during the crisis, but the department failed to do so.

Upon receiving information about the protest, a large police contingent from Kailashahar Police Station, along with TSR personnel, rushed to the spot. Additional Sub-Divisional Magistrate Karjon Halam also reached the scene and held talks with the protesters. However, the villagers refused to lift the blockade until departmental officials arrived in person and assured that repair work would be completed and water supply restored by the end of the day.

The blockade has resulted in long queues of stranded vehicles on both sides of the road, causing severe inconvenience to daily commuters. Tension in the area continues to escalate as the standoff persists.
