Agartala, 27th January 2026: A shocking allegation has surfaced against Chelagang police, as members of a women’s self-help group claim their office inside the police station complex has been illegally occupied and turned into a venue for liquor parties.
The incident came to light today, coinciding with the nation’s 77th Republic Day celebrations. Women from the Sarbanjaneen View self-help group, based in South Chelagang ADC village, arrived at their office only to find the door lock broken and furniture, including cupboards, dumped outside in neglect. Inside, they found scattered bottles of foreign liquor, leaving them stunned.
The office space had been allotted to the group nearly three years back through the local panchayat, to support their community initiatives. However, the women allege that police personnel themselves are behind the misuse. When confronted, OC Bimal Baidya reportedly denied any knowledge of the matter, raising questions about how a station chief could remain unaware of activities within his own premises.
Later, another police officer informed the agitated women that the room had been occupied during last year’s Durga Puja to accommodate additional TSR jawans. The women, however, questioned why they were never consulted before the lock was broken, nor informed when their belongings were left outside for months.
Their most pressing concern remains: why was their office furniture being used to host liquor gatherings inside a police complex, at a time when the state government is campaigning for a “Drug-Free Tripura”?
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, who say their trust in law enforcement is eroding. Community members now await whether higher authorities will take exemplary action against the alleged misconduct within Chelagang police station.
