Agartala, 7th May 2024 : In a concerning incident highlighting the perils of self-styled vigilantism, a couple in the Belonia Old Motor Stand area was viciously attacked by individuals purporting to uphold social consciousness. The assault, sparked by suspicions regarding the couple’s relationship, has ignited calls for stringent legal action against the perpetrators.
Sanjay Das, a local businessman, and his wife found themselves at the center of a harrowing ordeal when they were accosted by so-called social activists while returning home from a visit to an employee’s residence. The situation escalated when Das’ wife, on a whim, ventured towards a fair along Kachha Rasta, prompting a heated argument between the couple.
Amidst the discord, self-appointed social vigilantes intervened, erroneously accusing the couple of illicit intentions and subjecting them to physical assault without heed to their protests of marital status. The assailants purportedly circulated a video of the assault on social media, further exacerbating the couple’s distress.
In response, the aggrieved couple swiftly lodged a complaint at the Belonia Women’s Police Station, urging authorities to mete out justice against both the assailants and those responsible for disseminating the incriminating footage online. Legal experts contend that regardless of the veracity of the couple’s relationship, the actions of the vigilantes constitute a gross violation of personal liberties and defamation under various legal statutes, including the IT Act.
As public outcry mounts over the incident, pressure mounts on law enforcement agencies to promptly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unchecked vigilantism and underscores the imperative for robust legal safeguards to safeguard citizens’ rights and uphold the rule of law.
Authorities are now tasked with ensuring that justice is swiftly served, signaling a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle to combat extrajudicial vigilantism and preserve the fabric of a just and equitable society.
